Here is my problem, I have my original discs that I used in my Diablo adventures of past years but my 9 year old brother discovered the game about a year ago and has since lost the CD keys, which I had written on a post-it note in the CD case. I have gotten a necessary key from a friend to install the game.

Download Diablo II via that, install it with that file, and you should be good to go. I assumed you could do it just by patching the game, but apparently not from what you have said.
